Yoruba is a major African Language with over 20 million people who speak it. It is primarily spoken in southwestern Nigeria, Benin and Togo. It is part of the Niger-Congo language family. There are many dialects of Yoruba. As a result, the type of Yoruba spoken in southwestern Nigeria is not necessarily the same as the type spoken in Benin or Togo.
Modern Yoruba: The Yoruba used today has closely matched written and spoken forms on the recommendation of Yoruba Orthography Committee in 1966. This form is taught in schools and is used in radio, television, and newspapers.
